Such an extensive range of brassicas this week, it’s a sea of green over on the veg aisle. Particularly handsome are the bags of Cavolo nero from Wass in Yorkshire, who also provide a splash of colour with their purple and Romanesque cauliflowers. It is cauliflower time from now until the spring, so your opportunity to your hand at trendy cauliflower rice starts here! Mince florets into rice-size pieces in a food processor and steam, sauté or roast until softened – that’s it. For a lighter spin on hummus you can replace chickpeas with roasted cauliflower.
UK tomatoes are going to be patchy from now on. We are expecting one more pallet from the Isle of Wight, so make the most of it as European tomatoes simply can’t beat the flavour. Same goes for the selection of heirloom, beefsteak and San Marzano plum tomatoes from Glebelands down in Stockport.
Our top fruit shelf is expanding with ever more autumnal lines: satsumas, custard apples, fresh walnuts, quince, persimmons and chestnuts (really!). Pomegranates are moving to the next variety: Mollar d’Eche. It has a yellow skin and paler kernels, but it’s much sweeter and juicier than its bright red counterpart, which has some acidity that’s more suited to salads.
