As the nights begin to draw in we’re getting excited this week as the European citrus season starts to take off. We welcome our first Spanish oranges – the juicy and sweet Navelina variety – which join a European line up of scurvy-defeating citrus. We’ve got some lovely Spanish limes and sharp yet flavoursome clementines alongside star Ruby grapefruits and new season Fino lemons. Expect to see the fragrant Bergamote lemon available soon too…
The Wonderful variety of pomegranates and Sensation variety of mangos are both living up to their superlative monikers and join an exciting range of top-shelf autumnal fruit including chirimoyas and devilishly sweet persimmons.
Deserving too of a mention are the fantastic walnuts from Windmill Orchards down in Banbury – we’ve never seen UK dried walnuts before and we’re bowled over with the result, highly recommended.
Lovers of avocados will be pleased to see the Fuerte variety available from tomorrow – a gateway between the Bacon and Hass varieties it has a creamier, denser flesh than the early Bacon we’ve been seeing these past few weeks.
On the UK side of things certain lines are beginning to drop off but we’re still seeing some lovely spinach beet coming through from Libby Flintoff up in Preston and some superior chard from Pam Bowers down in Lincolnshire. Don’t forget to grab one of our excellent value carving pumpkins either for some ghoulish crafting this Halloween.
