One of the stars of the show right now is true spinach on the foot from Glebelands City Growers down the road in Sale. Beautiful dark leaves are freshly harvested for us 3 times a week. Good availability for a few weeks as well a sprinkling from Libby Flintoff in Preston.
Beetroot in all its colours is brightening up the root section. Golden and striped beets make a visually appealing and tasty addition to salads and roasties. Bunched beetroot with tops are still looking good too. Did you know that historically beet leaves were consumed more than the root while the beetroot was often used for its vibrant hue (for dyes) and its medicinal properties?
UK tomatoes from the Isle of Wight have come to a very sudden end. Their production dipped significantly due to the change in weather. That makes them a tricky thing to source as availability out of Europe is very low.
As the southern hemisphere comes to a close for avocados and Spain hasn’t quite started yet, expect gaps over the next few weeks.
We have to take this opportunity to praise Joe Pardoe’s plums again – Dark blue large Haganta and little sweet damson-like Presenta. Last 2 weeks before season end! By the way, plums taste loads better if you don’t keep them in the fridge.
