Looking for the perfect roasting spud? Our annual taster night resulted in four favourites which are sure to cut the mustard for your festive feast. From the Wasses in Yorkshire we have the reliable Carolus, oval shaped with a floury texture and yellow flesh it makes a classic crispy roast potato. Also from Wass is the Rudolph variety- as the name suggests it is a yuletide family favourite; deep red skin and delicious white flesh with a smooth and creamy texture. Both Carolus and Rudolph will be available in 5kg sacks from Friday, as well as 12.5kg and 25kg sacks as usual.
Duncan Gielty over in Ormskirk brings us the Picasso, which roasts to a delicious melt-in-the-mouth texture and lovely flavour. Also popular is the Scottish variety Arran Victory from Skea in Dundee, which have vivid purple skins, white floury flesh, and a rich, earthy flavour.
Our citrus range is getting exciting with the addition of kumquats and limequats, Seville oranges and bergamot lemons for the marmalade-makers, and also the mighty citron. The real treasure of a citron is the thick inner white pith and delicate flavour. Often used to make jams and pickles you can also eat it in a salad. Juicy oranges and sweet ‘nules’ clementines are plentiful from Spain and Sicily, and the revered blood orange is on the horizon.
Last but not least we will have Brussels sprout stalks available throughout the week, make sure to eat the tops as well!
