This week, we would like to highlight the lovely produce coming in from our amazing community of local growers based around the north-west. We have an abundance of delicious local cherry tomatoes and green pointy peppers from Duncan Gielty in Ormskirk and Libby Flintoff, a superb market gardener based in Preston. Libby is now delivering to us twice a week and her produce is always impressive. Look out for her magnificent French beans and tender spinach beet leaf as well.
Duncan Gielty is first on the scene with UK-grown onions, undoubtedly the ultimate kitchen staple. UK onions are usually smaller in size but they pack a punch in flavour whether sliced thinly and eaten raw or cooked until caramelised. Remember to store onions in a dry place away from other vegetables due to their ability to draw out moisture.
Spring onions are growing profusely and we will have plenty in from our most local growers, Glebelands, based just around the corner in Sale. These young onions are the freshest you can get, so grab a bunch and relish the whole lot from root to tip. Broad beans are also excellent value at the moment and some of the best are coming from Farmstart based in Stockport, who continue to impress us with the quality of their veg this season.
On the fruit side, we will be getting deliveries of UK blueberries for the weekend; this is a rather special occurrence as they can be very hard to acquire due to low availability and tricky logistics. They are absolutely delicious and well worth the extra expense in comparison to European imports.
From further afield we’re expecting some beautiful French produce from Agrobiodrōme – a French growers’ co-op based near Provence. Their apricots and charentais melons are sure to be a treat.
