It’s interesting how the current situation brings issues to the front that have been around for a long time. While we’re in no way worried about our fruit and veg offer, we appreciate that for many of us the question where our food comes from feels less certain. Growing your own produce has a wealth of benefits and is hugely popular right now – that’s a lovely development!
Every year we get a wonderful supply of young plants raised by Glebelands City Growers in Sale. They grow the plants from organic seeds in their green house in peat free compost and in 100% recyclable pots. During the time the seedlings spend with them, they get lots of 1 to 1 love and attention- getting re-potted 2 to 3 times. This gives them the best possible start, so that when it comes to planting them out, their ‘plant immune system’ is strong and they’re less likely to be attacked by pests.
Once you take the plants home, they can be planted out immediately, but it doesn’t hurt to ease them into it. For the first few days, put them outside in the sun and bring them in at night, so they can get used to outside temperatures.
For now, we have transformed the kids’ area into the ‘garden area’ to support a better flow of people around the shop. At the minute you can find here:
- Various cherry tomatoes – bush, tumblers and climbers
- Various large tomatoes
- Chillies
- Brassicas (caulis, cabbages, kale)
- Salads
- Artichokes
- Peas and broad beans
And on the horizon: different chilli varieties, beans, squashes, cucumbers, courgettes and more!
Time to get your hands dirty 🙂
