We’re incredibly lucky to be able to look to some of our local suppliers in the North West this week for leafy salad greens to add a sparkle to your plate. The milder weather and sudden burst of sunshine has spurred on some produce that might otherwise still be on the limited side. Salad leaves from local growers Glebelands Organic Produce, just down the road in Sale, have been looking fabulous lately and we’re happy to say they’ll be in plentiful supply – so fill your boots!
Also from up north this week, as the last of the UK winter root crops come to an end we can expect to see more of Duncan Gielty’s lettuce varieties appear on the shelves. Duncan works tirelessly across his 113 acre farm up in Ormskirk to keep us supplied with fresh UK produce all year round. keep an eye out for his enticing looking flat lettuces and little gems.
From elsewhere, we’re expecting a small amount of over-wintered kale varieties from Farmstart in Stockport, and some utterly delicious rocket from Pam Bowers of Strawberry Fields later on in the week.
On the European side, courgettes and aubergines are offering excellent value at the minute, while Spanish strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries are abundant both in flavour and availability. We’ll also start to see the first bunched carrots from Italy this week, as European produce continues to fill the gap left by the end of many UK root crops.
