As we all do our best to keep cool in this uncommonly warm weather, spare a thought for all our growers who continue to work in these difficult conditions to deliver us quality, fresh produce. Many are clocking in in the early hours of the morning and returning to the fields late in the evening to avoid the most oppressive temps.
Spinach is particularly tricky at the moment; it’s a delicate crop and in this heat it has become an untenable line for many of our suppliers right now, so do expect a bit of a gap. That said, rainbow chard is a great alternative and we’ve got a fantastic supply courtesy of Glebelands to tide us over. We’re also well stocked in plenty of other salad options like mini cucumbers and spring onions from Lyncroft Farm and Libby Flintoff, as well as the larger Passandra cucumbers from Farmstart which present excellent value at 89p. Beans are also looking good this week, with flat and french varieties courtesy of Flintoff as well as the beautifully pigmented purple french beans from Farmstart.
Elsewhere you may have already noticed the gorgeous heritage potato varieties (currently red emerald and salad blue) from Gielty of Lyncroft Farm, which will provide a vibrant twist to a potato salad or curry.
Fruit side and flat nectarines are here and tasting utterly divine! We’ve also seen the first UK season plums this week to add to our extensive stone fruit offer. Finally, with the melon season near its end, prices will be going up after this week, so get them while you still can, you won’t regret it!
