From everyone at Unicorn we hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, and are feeling suitably well-rested as we head into the new year.
If you’ve been in the shop recently you’ll have likely noticed the absence of carrots on the display. The sudden and extreme cold snap of last month wreaked havoc on our growers’ crops, and many, many acres of produce were devastated by the sub zero temperatures. Growers only really have a sense of the extent of the damage once veg is pulled out the ground, and on such short notice it has been difficult to source alternatives from our European suppliers. Thankfully we expect to see the return of washed carrots, as well as cauliflowers and Farmstart’s beautiful salad mix this coming Thursday, so watch this space.
Other news this week and avocados are really starting to shine as the Spanish season gets underway. What makes a good avocado so creamy and delicious is its high fat content, and ours have it in abundance! And as with all produce, when it’s in season it doesn’t just taste the best, it’s also the best value: ours are currently selling at 59p each.
Elsewhere from Europe and it’s officially marmalade season! Citrus continues to dominate our fruit display at the minute, providing a fabulous pop of colour that we can all appreciate during these darker months. We’ve an excellent supply of Seville oranges, the type needed for a classic marmalade, but why not add a little twist to yours this year and add a bergamot lemon, or perhaps gorgeously pigmented blood orange?
