We really are very lucky to have such amazing growers so local to us. Farmstart, based in Stockport, and Glebelands, in Sale, are responsible for some of the most coveted, most exciting, and freshest produce we sell here at Unicorn. Much of the produce can be on the shelves in a matter of hours – a rare and special thing in today’s globalised food market. From rhubarb to radishes, herbs to pumpkins, lettuce to salad leaves, these operations may be small but their impact is not.
Case in point: late last year, when we were set to temporarily lose Glebeland’s gorgeous salad leaves mix while they took a well earned winter break, Farmstart came to the rescue and offered to cultivate their own mix— exclusively for us— and wow did they pull it out the bag. The salad leaf mix has been an undisputed highlight of our offer, at a time in the year when fresh UK produce is scarce. Now Glebelend’s is back, and we have salad mixes from both growers! Some of you may have noticed that some of the purslane leaves in Farmstart’s mix have started to flower as the plants have enjoyed the Spring sunshine in the tunnels at the farm. We think this is beautiful, adds interest to your salad bowl and you can of course eat them, just like the leaves and stems.
