It will be no surprise to any of you when we say it’s been especially wet this year. March alone was the wettest in 40 years, and while it hasn’t been much fun for any of us, for farmers the impact is rather more acute.
Waterlogged soil and other complications have massively impacted growers’ ability to prep their land and plant crops, causing significant backlogs across the UK. Spare a thought for them when you next find yourself grumbling on the morning commute!
That said, we’ve still lots of exciting new UK produce coming in at the moment; it’s a real testament to all our growers’ unrelenting perseverance and hard graft. Duncan Gielty’s Lancashire mini cucumbers are an undisputed highlight this week—small but perfectly formed—while Glebeland’s first hit of lettuces—the voluptuous Valdor and equally generous Winter Density—join Libby’s little gems and Strawberry Fields’ gorgeous red and green varieties.
From Europe, stone fruit season is well underway and filling the shop with the irresistible scent of summertime: our first deliveries of apricots, peaches and cherries arrived over the weekend, joining the (already!) succulently sweet nectarines.
See you soon!
