Is summer over already??
Hopefully not, but while we wait for the sun to come back, our veg display ought to brighten your day: our shelves are positively bursting with the very best in UK and European produce.
First on the list is our first hit of UK broccoli from Ormskirk, Lancashire. After a patchy spell due to extreme weather on the continent, the transition onto UK grown broccoli couldn’t come soon enough and we hope to have a consistent supply now for the foreseeable. Other firsts this week are UK gooseberries, due in on Thursday courtesy of Libby Flintoff, and while we’ve already seen a few smatterings of UK strawberries over the last couple of weeks, we had a delivery of some absolutely sensational Welsh strawbs today. There’s a limited supply for now but we hope to get another delivery by the end of the week. Gorgeous ruby interior and addictive in flavour.
And finally from the UK, we’ve got bunched, well, everything! Bunched carrots from Foskett and Gielty, bunched beetroot (both red and chioggia varieties) from Strawberry fields and Farmstart, and bunched onions from Strawberry Fields as well. Real showstoppers on the display and fantastic value too: remember you can eat everything you’re buying so don’t let those stems and leaves go to waste!
On the Euro side, watermelons will be taking a bit of a break since unpredictable (read: very, very wet) weather in Spain has ravaged farmers’ crops and sent prices rocketing. But worry not, we’ll be getting our first French charentais melons at the end of the week, and they never fail to disappoint.
