We are happy to report a seasonal shift of a veg news this week with orchard, vine and top fruits celebrating the glorious bridge between late summer and autumn.
UK plums are plentiful and tasting divine. There’s Marjorie’s Seedling, Monarch and Victoria varieties to choose between, from Carey Organics in Herefordshire at the start of the week and Sweet Apple Orchard in Suffolk for the weekend.
Perpignan extraordinaires Le Gros Bio are working with local French suppliers to bring us some delicious Bourjassotte figs. Prized for their superior jammy flavour and deep purple-red flesh, these teardrop delicacies are arriving perfectly ripe and ready to eat. Equally at home in a sweet or savoury setting, they instantly elevate a bowl of cereal or a seasonal salad.
We’re well underway with the start of the UK apple and pear season too. We’ve got Discovery, Worcester Pearmain, Laxton’s Superb, Red Devil, Scrumptious, Santana and Red Windsor varieties, each with a unique flavour profile. Please consult the tasting notes in store to compare levels of sweet, juice, crunch and tartness.
All the sunshine of the past few weeks has been gratefully received by the heads of sweetcorn, which are arriving with increasingly buttercup yellow corns. Our supply will be a mixture of Strawberry Fields, Vine House and Lyncroft Farm’s. Superbly sweet and hugely moreish, now is the time to enjoy these crowd-pleasing family favourites.
Benefitting too from the sunshine hours are Newfields’ cauliflowers which are arriving in massive calibres with a beautiful finish. Alongside the more traditional white, we also have the first purple and Romanesco of the year.
