Salads are not just for Summer, and as the weather draws in and our UK growers slow down it’s time to turn to France for these crops.
This time of year we are fortunate to be buying direct from Univert, a Co-operative of organic growers established in 1991.
Univert are passionate about growing in harmony with nature, and are lucky enough to find themselves situated in the South of France between the Camargue and Cevennes National Parks where the climate and the quality of soil are excellent.
Specialists in growing leafy greens their produce is of impeccable quality, picked just before departure it is as fresh as can be.
Alongside their beautiful heads of Batavia, Oakleaf and Butterhead Lettuce we’re buying Lambs Lettuce, Baby Spinach and Rocket to add some interest to your winter salads.
Lambs lettuce is rarely seen in supermarkets but is a delicious and delicate leaf which mixes well with the spicier and more flavoursome Rocket.
Univert are also champion radish growers and their generous bunches are shining with vitality on our display at the moment.
We’re also importing Feijoa from them a fascinating fruit with a short season only seen from our French growers. Cut open the dark green shells and eat with a spoon like a kiwi to enjoy its unusual bubblegum flavour.
