With the weather becoming milder, but our growers still having ‘wet underfoot’, we slowly see our favourite winter vegetables becoming available again. Cornish cauliflowers are back this week from F.Sampon in Penzance, alongside which we will have some vibrant beetroots: 3 different varieties available from Pam at Strawberry Fields, Graham at Chapel Organics and John in Newfields. John based in Yorkshire is also sending us some lovely kalettes (also named flower sprouts) which are perfect steamed, in a stir fry with some soy sauce or to enjoy with your Sunday roast.
Weather wise in Europe, temperatures have risen, as has anger amongst farmers. Without getting into too much detail, we in this country had Riverford who made the case by submitting their #GetFairAboutFarming petition to Parliament last week. Protests in France are disrupting the traffic and we have experienced some delays but are making sure to keep our shelves looking abundant. This week we are seeing the first spanish (and sicilian) strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, as well as some corsican kiwis and amazing citruses from Sicily.
