Francis Sampson has been supplying Unicorn with winter cauliflowers from his Cornish farm for as long as we can all remember. We were sad to hear that this will be his final growing season before he retires for a well deserved rest and to tackle his growing list of jobs around the farmhouse.
Last week our UK Veg buyers, Lee & Will took the long trip to the south coast to meet with Francis and take a look around his farm. The hills on the Cornish peninsula are the perfect growing conditions for winter brassicas, and it was great to see where our supply of Spring Greens, Purple Sprouting Broccoli, and of course, Cauliflowers have been thriving before being transported up Manchester.
More importantly, we were there to give our thanks to Francis for the many years of hard work, in difficult conditions to provide consistently good produce at a time where UK brassicas are hard to come by. If you’ve cooked a cauliflower bought from Unicorn between October and May, the chances are, it was planted and harvested by Francis himself. His hard work is appreciated by us all. Happy retirement!
