Whilst we are still firmly in the grasps of the hungry gap on UK brassicas, cabbage and kales our growers other leafy produce is coming along nicely.
Our French producers lettuce crops are becoming scarce after struggling in the heavy rain and fluctuating temperatures over the Channel but just in time Strawberry Fields crop of field grown lettuces are ready for harvest. We have our first pallet of Green Batavia and Oakleaf arriving from Pam on Friday and we can’t wait.
Our local growers up at Kindling Market Garden have also got a selection of their tunnel grown lettuces for us with some Red Oakleaf arriving ready for the weekend.
Duncan at Lyncroft Farm has some lovely baby spinach for us this week. Delicate enough for a salad or fantastic thrown into a midweek curry. Pak choi is also looking great out of his tunnels, as well as mini cucumbers from the glasshouse.
From Europe our fruit offer is growing in range every day but we are particularly pleased with the first arrival of Spanish cherries. We’re buying the Nimba variety and they have started with a great colour and brilliant depth of flavour, for so early in the season, a sign of exciting things to come!
We’ve also been loving the early season Spanish watermelons, already sweet with a really good texture we’re hoping for the sunny weekend we’ve been promised to enjoy these.
