Veg News 21st August
This week, we will be adding orange kuri pumpkin to our ever growing shelf of squashes, all coming from Pam at Strawberry Fields. Sweetcorn is finally in full swing too, courtesy of Lucy Taylor at Vine House Farm and also Pam of Strawberry Fields. On Friday, we will receive our first hit of broccoli from John up in north Yorkshire. Broccoli is very versatile, and we love it roasted with some za’atar or steamed and added to a salad.
On the fruit side, we will have a full UK supply of Victoria plums, coming from Duncan Gielty in Ormskirk, Joe Pardoe in Herefordshire, and Margaret Cherry in Suffolk. This english variety is a firm customer favourite, delicious cooked in a crumble or eaten as a snack perfectly ripe, they have been eagerly anticipated in the shop. In addition to the plums, Margaret Cherry is bringing the first harvest of William pears, heralding the equally anticipated start of the UK pear season. And new season osteen mangoes from Spain are a real tropical treat and not to be missed this week!
Today, we have all been trying the new potato range on offer. Here are some of our spud tasting notes:
Manitou: Red skinned with flavoursome yellow flesh, a slightly softer and fluffier texture
Gemson: A delicious earthy flavour, waxy and buttery, great for salad
Acoustic: Sweet and nutty with a fluffy texture, perfect for mash
Marfona: A smooth, buttery taste, perfect for boiling
Sunita: Moist with a rich flavour and a smooth, creamy texture
Picasso: A dense, flavoursome, and waxy spud, perfect for curries
What’s been your go-to spud so far this season?
