Fresh from the Yorkshire fields this week we have some beautiful bunched carrots, courtesy of John at Newfields farm. By the end of the week, he will greet us with some mixed cauliflowers and beautiful leafy savoy cabbages. On the brassica range, this week may be the last of the Lancashire cavolo nero that Libby from Flintoff farm has been supplying us with all summer. Her crop ending doesn’t mean we won’t have anymore: Pam from Strawberry fields is cutting leaves down in Lincolnshire for us. Cavolo nero, meaning black kale in italian, with its dark green leaf is delicious to cook with. As with the green or red kale, which we are getting from Kindling Market Garden in Stockport, you can fry it with garlic and onion, steam it for a simple side, or add it to any type of stew or curry.
We are getting word from our growers that the fluctuation of light level has been affecting their growth. Our tomato growers on the Isle of Wights have a smaller availability this week, and our local grower of cucumbers are seeing their crop tailing off. We will be supplementing the gaps thanks to our suppliers in Europe.
On the fruit side we will be getting three different varieties of plums from Sweet Apple Orchards in Suffolk and some Damsons plums from our land in Glazebury (in very limited supply). Osteen Mangoes are in full supply this week, and taste absolutely fantastic too.
