As we approach the end of the UK Plum Season, we strongly suggest choosing this delightful top fruit (a top fruit is one that grows on trees!) for your lunchtime treat. This week we’ve got three varieties, so feel free to mix and match.
First, from our only UK Biodynamic Fruit Grower Sweet Apple Orchards in Suffolk, we have the gorgeous ‘Laxton Croppers’. These smaller fruits are slightly tart and boast a gorgeous, pinkish hue. Alongside these we have the ‘Victoria’ from Windmill Orchards in Banbury, and some ‘Top Hit’ from Pardoe in Herefordshire. We think the Victoria plums work wonderfully in a pie or crumble, and match perfectly with the Grenadier Cooking Apple from Unicorn’s own land in Glazebury.
From further afield we have a late crop of Reine Claude de Bavay French Greengages. These are a Unicorn favourite: they’re sweet, delicious, and one is never enough.
Finally, from our stalwart grower Duncan Gielty over in Ormskirk we’ve got a fantastic tight headed crop of Purple Sprouting Broccoli. PSB shines when scorched or roasted on a salad, as well as being a great addition to one of the first roast dinners of the season. Ideal given we’re not sure if it will be 26 degrees or cold and rainy outside at the moment!
