UK Isle of Wight tomatoes are here! And this always gets the Unicorn veg team super excited. Their sweet, earthy aroma fills the veg area, and that unmistakable full-bodied flavour is the first taste of UK summer abundance.
For over 15 years, Isle of Wight Tomatoes have been growing their delicious crops in the sun-drenched, fertile soil of the Arreton Valley. When they started in 2007, average supermarket offerings were often a bit sad, ordinary, and lacking in flavour. Isle of Wight Tomatoes set out to change that, and it’s safe to say they’ve succeeded.
As well as growing top-notch tomatoes, they’re also dedicated to sustainable farming practices – harvesting rainwater for irrigation, encouraging natural pollination by native bumblebees, and recycling all crop waste to enrich the soil. They’re working towards becoming a zero-waste business, and have earned B Corp certification for their efforts.
While all of their tomatoes are incredible, the cherry plums are a staff favourite. At home in a salad or roasted until blistered alongside other ratatouille crops, they add a flavoursome burst and dash of colour to any dish.
Alongside our fantastic UK range, we also have some beautiful French beefsteak tomatoes in a variety of colours – black, red and yellow. These tomatoes are naturally softer and more delicate than their vined counterparts, and are best eaten when the flesh has really softened and darkened.
Try grating them raw with a good glug of olive oil, some salt and pepper, and eating with sourdough – absolutely delicious!
