Winter weather in Spain is causing a scarcity of su
n loving crops. Cucumbers, courgettes and aubergines are tricky to source. Trade magazines report that supermarkets are struggling for salads and lettuces out of Spain, which makes us extra proud of being able to offer our local supply of salad leaves. The Glebelands winter mix includes winter Purslane, red and green mizuna, radicchio, endives and mustard varieties from their Stockport site.
French growers’ co-operative Univert are responsible for the stunning rainbow chard, spinach and fresh herbs on our shelves from Thursday. We visited their vast operation in the autumn and were blown away by their passion for growing in harmony with nature (and the farmer’s insistence on getting us drunk…) Make sure to use the chard stalks as they hold a lot of flavour and juice.
The citrus range is worth mentioning again. Blood oranges and navels are at their best right now and mandarines from Agrico-op are the tastiest we’ve had so far. Look out for a rare appearance of minneolas at the weekend.
Hardier winter veg broccoli and fennel are offering good value, as do butternuts.
