A fruity veg news! As the stone fruit season is slowly ending in Spain and France, UK fruits are beginning to steal the spotlight; berries and plums in particular this week and the UK apple season starting next week!
Plums are really coming into their own with dark purple variety Sanctus Hubertus from Carey (Herefordshire) tasting great. Thier redcurrants and jostaberries are also abundant. Jostaberries are a cross between a blackcurrant and gooseberry. They do great work in crumbles with their sweet-tangy flavour and they’re very suitable for jamming as they contain a high level of naturally occurring pectin.
Lemons need a bit of explaining: they are very scarce worldwide and consequently prices have soared over the last 2 months. At the minute we’re stocking green lemons from Agrico-op in Sicily. Lemons stay green when there is little temperature difference between day and night, but they are ripe and juicy all the same. Southern Hemisphere season is kicking off next week, but we’re not expecting that to be overly abundant either.
Highlights on the veg side: UK Aubergines are a staff fave right now – arguably best griddled and covered in pesto! Majestically big bunches of cavolo nero courtesy of Wass in Yorkshire: we like to simply steam or sauté to keep the most flavour.
