It’s slowly becoming apparent how much UK roots suffered from the summer drought. Staple crops such as onions, carrots and potatoes that we’re used to be able to take for granted in terms of availability and low value, are a real struggle for farmers all over the country, both in organic and conventional production. As a result, we’re expecting higher prices on these products throughout the autumn and winter season in order to give famers a way to recover some of their losses.
Celery is also an obvious water-loving crop that is difficult to source right now. Both Strawberry Fields’ and Carey’s whole crop failed, Wass’ has been been lovely, but they’re having a gap in their supply to let the stalks grow large enough. Similar with fennel, so expect both products supplemented out of Holland.
Apples and pears seem to have decent yields this year. We have started on conference pears from Baxters in Kent and the range of UK apple varieties is expanding rapidly. Scrumptious from Oakwood Farm in Sussex have that ‘proper English apple flavour’ – intense and well balanced. Also look out for Rosette and their gorgeous red skins and flesh.
