At the risk of repeating ourselves it’s important to highlight once again the difficult season our UK farmers have had this year. A freezing start to the year turned immediately into scorching May temperatures and water shortages during critical planting stages throughout the summer. As well as certain crops like celery being spoilt in the fields, many of the staple root crops such as carrots and onions suffered a lot in these conditions. You may notice our shop floor prices are a little higher than in seasons past but it’s vital we pay a price that reflects the scarcity of the produce and gives farmers a way to recover some of their losses.
Fruit wise we’re feeling the changing of the season as quince and fresh nuts are both starting to appear. From Europe we’re seeing the first persimmon and chirimoyas too, and we continue to showcase the bumper apple and pear harvest from across the UK. Vine tomatoes remain tricky, expect a gap or two as we piecemeal a supply between Holland, Italy and Spain…
