A rare March pancake day is the perfect prompt to speak a little bit about lemons. They have just climbed out of a 2 year slump. A combination of bad harvests in Spain and South America and trade embargoes on South African crops, resulted in low availability and sky high prices. You’ll have seen many small fruits and not the prettiest ones either! That’s in past with current Spanish and Sicilian lemons looking and tasting the part as well as offering excellent value.
Lemons are not the only pancake topping worth mentioning. In fact, for fans of savoury pancakes spinach and mushrooms probably make ideal companions. As it happens, this week sees the start of UK true spinach from Duncan Gielty in Lancashire. Grown in unheated polytunnels, the last few sunny weeks have really helped to boost growth. Libby Flintoff from Preston is also dropping off a decent amount of spinach beet. We’ll still be supplementing with deliveries of French spinach from Univert in Provence until UK quantities pick up.
A few more things to highlight: look out for UK rocket from Strawberry Fields (Lincs). From Europe we’re expecting the first Dutch cucumbers and grapefruits from Spain are delicious!
