Despite grey skies and freezing winds here in Manchester, our fruit and veg display is betraying a colourful shift towards spring. Blueberries, yellow courgettes, rainbow chard and purple sprouting broccoli are all sitting pretty next to these loose strawberries from Spain.
We aim to sell produce with as little extra packaging as possible, and offer loose options where we can. This week we are trialling selling strawberries loose; there’s no plastic box and you can buy as many or as few as you choose.
Annoyingly, plastic is a suitable material for transporting a lot of delicate fruit and veg. It protects small and soft fruits from bruising and absorbs no moisture, prolonging the shelf life. Please let us know what you think of these, and how you get on transporting them home!
On the veg side, purple sprouting broccoli is tasting its best at the moment, and is a popular choice for a quick tea. Team it with pasta, stir fry it with garlic or simply steam to best enjoy these heady violet florets. Ours is coming up from Francis Sampson on the Cornish coast of Penzance.
