What a difference a sunny week makes… Libby Flintoff reports it has done wonders for her spinach crop and can now offer an abundance of true spinach and spinach beet. Libby’s produce is always of remarkable quality as anyone who’s tasted her peppery rocket recently can no doubt confirm.
UK asparagus is making its debut! Lucy Watts from Lincolnshire is sending the first new season asparagus on Thursday. Their small scale farm also does the birdseed we always have in stock and have supplied the mainstay of our UK asparagus offer for years. It’s a short season, so get your recipes out and let us know your favourites…
Strawberry Fields is adding more varieties of herbs to the range: lovage, oregano, sage and peppermint (small quantities to begin with).
We also got an update from Paul Badcock from Rospeath Farm in Cornwall. He’s lifting new potatoes in the middle of May; only 3 weeks away! This eases worries we’ve had since last year’s drought, that stored potatoes would run out before the new crop appears.
In Europe we can finally see product origins change from Spain to France. We already started with French broad beans and now fennel (beautiful) and courgettes are migrating North! Tumultuous weather in Spain (heavy rain and floods) doesn’t stop summery produce from appearing: expect the first batches of mini watermelons, peaches and nectarines later this week.
