It’s been a really challenging month for our growers with so much June rainfall and Lincolnshire has been hit particularly hard. You should recognise “Strawberry Fields Farm” from our twice weekly deliveries since way back in the day, a backbone of our fine UK range. In the past few weeks much of Pam Bowers’ fenland farm has been flooded, but miraculously she still manages to send top quality celery, lettuce, chard and a fine array of herbs into Unicorn every Tuesday and Friday. Hats off to her and her hardworking team.
UK broccoli makes its debut this Thursday, the first in from Will Edwards of New Farm, also in Lincolnshire. Green curly kale is also back after its short hiatus, and should be on our shelves more or less consistently from now on, sitting alongside tender black kale, also known as cavolo nero, from Libby Flintoff near Preston. We’re seeing the first trickle of other UK crops like red and yellow peppers, French beans, bunched beetroot and courgettes which just need a good dose of sunshine to hit full steam.
New season Spanish butternuts are tasting deliciously creamy and the first Italian grapes arrive on Thursday – the start of the European season.
