We’re always looking at ways to combat our dependency on single-use plastics here at Unicorn, so we’re absolutely delighted to share with you that Duncan Gielty’s leafy produce will now be wrapped in a fully home-compostable plastic film courtesy of TIPA. This new packaging looks and performs just like regular plastic in keeping produce fresh, the only difference being that when you’re done with it, simply place in your home compost and let soil organisms do the rest! We’re in the process of phasing in TIPA compostable bags for our salad leaves and other bagged veggies as well, so watch this space! Back to vegetables, and Sampson’s cauliflower deliveries continue to impress in both size and flavour. Cauliflower is a wonderfully versatile vegetable that can be fried, roasted, baked, and more. Its distinctive flavour matches particularly well with middle eastern flavours: try roasting in olive oil and za’atar (a middle eastern spice and sesame mix) for the perfect mezze side dish. Alternatively, roughly blend before sautéing in olive oil for a flavoursome alternative to couscous or bulgur wheat. On the fruit side of things we’ve received our first loquats of the year from Spain. These little fruits have a delightfully tangy, delicately fragrant flavour, with an exceptionally juicy, almost creamy texture. The skin can be quite bitter so we do recommend peeling before eating.
