It comes as no surprise that the recent extreme weather is dominating veg news this week, with the cold snap having wreaked havoc for growers across the country.
Widespread ice and snow have made harvesting conditions extremely challenging, but our growers have persevered in bringing in what they can for your plates. Special mentions to Pam of Strawberry Fields, Lincolnshire and John of New Fields, North Yorkshire who are quite frankly our heroes at this point. It’s difficult to get across the sheer level of commitment required to be out in the fields everyday at 7am in sub zero temperatures, but we are incredibly grateful for the hard graft of all our growers who are working tirelessly through these less than optimal conditions.
Unfortunately we do expect to see a few gaps here and there—with brassicas and delicate leafy lines particularly hard hit—but with weather conditions set to improve by the weekend, we hope to experience minimal disruptions during Christmas week.
Elsewhere on veg this week we’ve got two pallets from Agricoop, Sicily expected at the weekend, which includes the last of the season’s sensational Sicilian pomegranates. We’re also very excited to see the return blood oranges, which will be accompanying the already fabulous selection of citrus on offer at the minute.
