The New Year has brought a dramatic start to 2025 weather-wise, creating significant challenges for our UK growers. They’ve been battling flooded fields, frozen ground, and layers of snow and ice.
As ever, we’re incredibly grateful for their determination and graft, ensuring our veg display remains as abundant as possible. Despite the tough conditions, they’ve delivered a stunning selection of fresh, UK-grown produce. Do expect some gaps this week on cold-sensitive lines such as Brussels sprouts. That said, the display is still brimming with fresh green brassicas and an impressive range of UK root veg.
We also have a plentiful supply of Cornish cauliflowers from Penzance this week. Thanks to its unique microclimate (about 5 degrees warmer than much of the UK), Penzance is ideal for growing winter cauliflowers, and these beautiful caulis are in good supply despite the cold snap. Cauliflower is a wonderfully versatile vegetable, perfect for a range of dishes and cuisines. Try it simply roasted with your favourite herbs and spices, oil, salt, and pepper, or visit our website for recipes like creamy cauliflower Alfredo or spiced cauliflower koftas. Don’t forget the leaves! Often discarded, they are absolutely delicious. Throw them in the oven alongside the florets or cook like you would any type of tender cabbage leaves.
On the Euro side, we will be topping up the UK brassica range with some Spanish kale and cavolo for the weekend, alongside some impressive bunches of Dutch pak choi and heads of Spanish Chinese cabbage. Fennel is looking and tasting amazing, with plenty more arriving fresh tomorrow. Simply delish!
