Our UK brassicas and root stand continue to shine this week as the weather (thankfully!) slowly starts to improve.
We have the much anticipated arrival of kalettes this week courtesy of John and Rachel up at Newfields in North Yorkshire. Also known as ‘flower sprouts,’ these delicious brassicas are a cross between Brussels sprouts and kale and have a rich, nutty, sweet flavour and a crunchy, satisfying bite. Sauteé in a pan with some garlic and olive oil and enjoy simply seasoned to enjoy the subtle flavour of young, fresh kale.
We have our first mixed pallet from Chapel Organics up in Scotland this week. The farm is run by father and son duo Graham and Angus Elder. The Elder family have been farming at Chapel Farm since 1952 and farming organically since 2000. The farm is close to the coastal town of North Berwick, about 20 miles east of Edinburgh, where the fertile soils and local climate are ideal for producing a range of organic crops. This week we have some of their delicious january king and tundra cabbages, swede and absolutely stunning leeks to join their hearty onions and potatoes.
Speaking of leeks, if you have been enjoying any leeks from the shop in the last few weeks they have been courtesy of Pam, Clyde (trimming duty) and Dicken (pulling duty) at Strawberry Fields down in Lincolnshire who have been battling the frozen ground, cold and frost to deliver them by the pallet load for delicious winter warming pies, stews and soups. The attached pics give a bit of a sense of some of the conditions our growers have been tackling the last couple of weeks!
And with that, another huge thank you to all of our growers who have really done us proud in delivering a showstopping array of produce these last couple of weeks, really going above and beyond to keep the shelves piled high with delicious produce, for which we are always eternally grateful.
A last honourable mention to Duncan Gielty at Lyncroft Farm in Ormskirk, who has been pulling it out of the bag for us with fresh, Lancashire-grown kales, cabbages, carrots, his ever-popular Maris Piper potatoes and a recent addition – collard greens. Closely related to cabbage, kale and mustard greens they can be prepared in much the same way. They also make a great wrap for cabbage rolls stuffed with rice and sauteéd veg, a welcome new addition!
